Ultimate Irony kicked off IRONICUS’s week with a maiden victory at Fair Grounds on Sunday to become his sire’s third winner from a limited number of starters.
Stretching out to 1 1/16 miles in his second turf start, the Michael Stidham trainee was one of the best out of the gate and angled a few paths off the rail to closely attend the leaders.
The chestnut stayed in touch with the leaders throughout the race as Angel Suarez waited for the perfect time to cue his mount. Ready to run as they turned into the stretch, Suarez angled Ultimate Irony through a hole and the juvenile started to work his way to the front.
The colt showed his closing kick in the final sixteenth as he ran past the leader close to the line to win by three quarters of a length for owner Timothy Stupka.
Out of the Van Nistelrooy (Storm Cat) mare Cody Cowgirl, Ultimate Irony was bred in Kentucky by Anita Nesser and BHMFR, LLC. The colt is one of two winners out of the mare and from the family of champion racehorse and sire Ribot.
