Quenane pulled an upset for ALGORITHMS on Saturday when the 6-year-old registered an all-the-way victory in the Millions Classic Preview Stakes at Gulfstream Park West.
Racing over a mile on the dirt, the gelding enjoyed the sloppy track when breaking strongly to take command by the time they reached the first turn. Working with jockey Angel Arroyo every step of the way, Quenane didn’t mind stakes winner Red Crescent racing alongside him as they set sensible fractions.
Arroyo asked his mount to go with a little over two furlongs to run and Quenane dug in deep to pull away from the field. Leaving all challengers, Quenane opened up multiple lengths and had a big enough advantage that the late closing multiple stakes winner Noble Drama could only get within a length of him at the line.
“He’s never won gate to wire in his career,” said trainer Tamara Levy. “He knows the pace, he’s an older horse. He knows where the wire is. He knows the job, so you’ve got to kind of let him decide. Sometimes he knows best. Angel did a terrific job today.”
Trained by Levy for IAB Stables and Walter Fralick, Quenane was winning his 13th race in 47 starts with 14 other top three finishes to break the $300,000 in earnings mark with this win.
Bred by P & G Stables and never offered at public auction, Quenane is a half-brother to five other winners and is out of five-time winner Awesome Powers by Awesome Again.
