With a three-month lay-off under his belt after his troubled, but close runner-up debut,SPECIAL ENVOY drew away from his rivals to win this Maiden Special Weight 4 1/2 lengths. In his second start racing 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Tampa Bay, the 3-year-old colt bySTROLL settled early in eighth but only five lengths off the lead. The Mr. and Mrs. Bertram R. Firestone homebred moved up on the final turn, swung four wide to catch the leader and then quickly drew off through the stretch. In his Maiden Special Weight debut, the colt out of the Cozzene mare, Diplomacy, broke awkwardly from post 11 to put himself 14 lengths back after a half, but rallied strongly through the stretch to finish just a neck back at the wire.
