It was a second stakes winner in 24 hours for WAR FRONT on Sunday when Belgrano won the Select Stakes at Monmouth Park.
Racing over 5 ½ furlongs on the turf, Belgrano broke well and was happy to race in fifth as a group of four dueled in front of him. Moving a few lengths closer in the turn, Belgrano was just behind the leader at the top of the stretch and from there shot through a hole to take charge.
Belgrano had to hold on late but had enough in hand to win by a neck for owner Peace Sign Stables and Frank Russo. Belgrano follows Stolen Holiday as WAR FRONT stakes winners at Monmouth Park this weekend.
This is the third stakes victory for Belgrano, who has also placed in three other stakes with a career record of nine wins and 15 other top three finishes in 41 career starts. In 2022 alone, the 8-year-old has hit the board in five of his six starts.
Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Belgrano is out of the Grade 1 winner Ask The Moon. That operation purchased her carrying Belgrano for $1.8 million at the 2013 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale with the mare also producing Grade 3-placed Sundaysatthebeach after Belgrano was born.
