Aftercare Efforts

"If you love the horse, you've got to take care of him."
– Dell Hancock

Claiborne’s commitment to quality doesn’t expire when a racehorse has finished their racing or breeding careers. The welfare of the horse is always a priority. Over the years, our partnerships with non-profits and re-homing organizations have led to numerous success stories. Through donations and teamwork, the goal is to make sure every horse that comes from Claiborne retires to a good home. Additionally, at Claiborne we’re proud to have a barn dedicated solely to retirees, a passion project of our own Dell Hancock. Geldings, pensioned broodmares and their companions are tended to daily and ensured a forever home.

Retrained/Rehomed

Apart

Apart was rehomed to a family in VA and is also a hunt horse!

Betweenhereandcool

Betweenhereandcool was claimed back by the farm and is enjoying his retirement from racing!

Blame Bernie

“We’ve been working on dressage and he’s absolutely loving it! He’s a super smart horse and I’m so lucky to have him.”

By George

Rehomed via Second Stride: Sound but slow, By George arrived at Second Stride in February of 2022 and was quickly adopted. He is athletic and has a promising second career ahead of him.

Deserved

Rehomed via Second Stride: Abby and Desi competed in the 2018 RRP and are now working on dressage together. He is up in Wisconsin with a family that loves him very much.

Gullible

Gullible was purchased by Tom Kirlin as an amateur steeplechase prospect from trainer Ricky Hendricks back in the early 2000’s. “He has been a flat horse, hurdle horse, timber horse, fox hunter, competed in eventing, done some hunter/jumper stuff and has been a pony horse when our daughter was learning to ride and he is happy to just hack around the farm as well. He is a phenomenal mover, excellent jumper and has been amazingly sound for all that he has done and accomplished in his life and he is the boss of the barn! Thank you Claiborne for such a stellar horse, the fun we have had with him over the years is priceless!”

Hilt

Rehomed via Second Stride: “Hilty is the perfect baby hunter, still going to pursue eventing. Although he is waiting for his 3 year old human to get old enough to show!”

Keros

Keros is now owned by Hellena Replogie… “I adore him and I’m excited to see how we do at the makeover!”

Kiai

Rehomed Privately: “Kiai came to Scheffelridge farm in May 2018 to be the Georgetown College entry for the RRP Team competition. He quickly showed us that he was going to be a quick learner, and a very talented show horse. After competing in both show hunters and show jumpers, Kiai finished fourth overall in the team competition at the RRP! Not long after he began showing great potential to be a horse for children due to his quiet and forgiving nature. Today he is competing successfully with Finley Scheffel in the 2’6 hunter divisions, and he is taking care of all kinds of different riders in weekly riding lessons. We are so grateful to Claiborne Farm for the opportunity to have Kiai! When working with Kiai, it is easy to see that he has received top quality care and training from day one, which allowed him to seamlessly transition from being a race horse to a show horse.”

Orders

Rehomed Privately: Orders is now owned by his former exercise rider Hilary Bauer and is exploring a variety of different disciplines!

2020 First Samurai - Spiel
