It was a second straight graded stakes victory for MASTERY’s Midnight Memories on Sunday when she overcame a difficult trip to win the Zenyatta Stakes (G2).
Midnight Memories stumbled at the break and had to chase down those who had gotten a jump on her. As the field entered the final five furlongs of the 1 1/16 mile race, Midnight Memories was making a challenge for the lead but the others weren’t leaving her alone and she still had to dig in to get a clear lead.
It was a fight throughout the race for her but she finally shook loose at the furlong pole and ran away from there to win by 3 ¼ lengths.
The filly is raced by her breeders Michael Pegram, Paul Weitman, and Karl Watson and trained by Bob Baffert. She’s won four of five starts and last out broke her stakes maiden with a win in the Torrey Pines Stakes (G3).
Midnight Memories is out of another homebred in the Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Tiz Midnight. That mare is out of Tough Tiz’s Sis, who won two Grade 1s for Karl Watson and Paul Weitman.
Tiz Midnight has two winners from two to race and is one of four winners out of her dam. Tough Tiz’s Sis is one of two stakes winners for her own stakes-placed dam alongside stakes winning Golly Greeley. The mare is also a half-sister to stakes placed Leaseholders Dream.
