Surprisingly Again Catches Eye For MASTERY

MASTERY’s Surprisingly added a second victory in three career starts to her resume on Thursday with a 3 ½ length victory in an Allowance against her elders for Phipps Stable.

Making her first start on turf in the one-mile race, Surprisingly was part of a group close behind the leader, racing a few paths off the rail to stay out of traffic. That move paid off with the filly ranging up to the leader in the stretch and flying right on by.

Jockey Declan Cannon didn’t ask the filly for much in the final sixteenth with Surprisingly keeping her momentum going until the line.

Trained by Shug McGaughey, Surprisingly is a fourth generation Phipps homebred whose fourth dam is the successful broodmare Our Country Place.

In addition to being the dam of Grade 1 winner Pleasant Home, she is also the dam of Surprisingly’s third dam Matalacha Pass. That mare produced Grade 1 winners Point of Entry and Pine Island. Surprisingly’s own dam is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Great Island.
