UPDATED: Two-Year-Old MASTERY Colts Among Select Fasig-Tipton Offerings

One of the most selective 2-year-old sales of the 2-year-old season, the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale sees only 186 juveniles cataloged for the March 31 sale – and MASTERY has two of them.

One of only a handful of freshman sires to see their juveniles selected for the sale, both of MASTERY’s go through the ring early in the event.

The first through the ring for the Claiborne stallion is Hip 33 consigned by Wavertree Stables. A $135,000 yearling purchase last October, the Candy Meadows-bred is a half-brother to the winning Bay Storm – their young dam’s first runner. That dam is stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Stormy Regatta, whose half-sister has already produced the stakes performing You Cheated.

There is stakes type under three of the colt’s four dams on the page with his stakes winning third dam producing Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Utopian. The success continues on past Grade 2 winning fourth dam Speed Dialer, with that mare a half-sister to champion Wavering Girl, Grade 2 winner Tricky Creek, and others.

Thirty-three hips after the Stormy Regatta colt is Mastery’s colt out of Veronique consigned by James Layden as Hip 56 who worked in 10:2 at the breeze show.

Since he sold as a yearling last October, the April-born colt has seen plenty of updates in the sales ring and on the track. His half-brother Nashville set the track record at Keeneland in early November with an geared down 3 ½ length victory in the Perryville Stakes for his third win in three starts. Only days later, Vernoique sold for $800,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

The mare was joined at the sale by her 2020 MASTERY filly at the sale, that filly was purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $400,000.

Hip 56’s dam is only the tip of the iceberg, his page also includes a Kentucky Derby (G1) winner. That Kentucky Derby (G1) winner is Giacomo, a full brother to this colt’s granddam Styler, with that mare also the dam of three stakes horses. A two-time winner herself, Styler is also a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner and classic placed Tiago, Grade 3 winner Stanwyck, and Grade 2-placed Sea Jewel.

MASTERY’s first crop has been in demand in the sales ring with his first yearlings bringing $510,000, $450,000, $400,000, ect. last fall.
