2026 Breeders’ Cup Features 21 Entries from Claiborne Families

By B. Jason Brooks

Claiborne Farm’s influential bloodlines are again on full display at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Keeneland, with 21 of the 187 entries – an impressive 11.2 percent – representing 15 of the farm’s female families.  This significant share of the Breeders’ Cup entries is not a surprise, with horses from Claiborne families having captured 37 graded stakes, including seven grade 1s, in the U.S. and Canada so far this year.

The all-star roster includes six colts and 15 fillies – all bred in the U.S. except for Irish-bred Sale Shark (Bayside Boy {IRE}) – with eight of them juveniles racing on Friday and 13 of them three years or older racing on Saturday.

These entries from Claiborne families are spread across ten of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races, including four of the five juvenile races and six of the nine races for ages three years and older.  The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint has the most entries from Claiborne families with four, followed by the Distaff, Juvenile Turf Sprint, and Filly & Mare Sprint with three each.

The accomplished group includes eight grade 1 winners, including two champions and two previous Breeders’ Cup winners.  Leading the roster are Nitrogen (Medaglia d’Oro), the 2024 Sovereign Champion 2-Year-Old Filly and 2025 Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, whose victories include the 2026 Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) and 2025 Alabama Stakes (G1); and Shisospicy (Mitole), the 2025 Eclipse Champion Female Sprinter and winner of that year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1).

Four others earned their first grade 1 victories this year: Explora (Blame) in the Test Stakes (G1); Eunomia (Tiz the Law) in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1); Kathynmarissa (American Pharoah) in the Diana Stakes (G1); and Voyager (Justify) in the Natalma Stakes (G1).  Voyager is out of Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider-bred Chart (Lea).

The two other grade 1 winners, both from prior years, include Cy Fair (Not This Time), who captured the 2025 Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1), and Scottish Lassie (McKinzie), who won the 2024 Frizette Stakes (G1) and 2025 Coaching Club American Oaks (G1).

The 15 Claiborne female families represented in the Breeders’ Cup include four from the family of Bourtai (Stimulus), two each from Fairy Ray (GB) (Radium {GB}), Tea Biscuit (Rock Sand {GB}), and Venturesome (GB) (Sir Martin), and one each from Dusty Vixen (Fighting Fox), Fairest (Known Fact), Flaming Top (Omaha), Flickering Star (Chompion), Lighted Lamp (Sir Gaylord), Mermaid (St. Blaise {GB}), Peroration (GB) (Clarissimus {GB}), Regal Gleam (Hail to Reason), Royal Message (Star Shoot {IRE}), Sicklefeather (Sickle {GB}), and Vashti (Gallant Fox).  (Included among these Claiborne foundation mares are Mermaid, who was acquired by Richard J. Hancock, father of Claiborne founder Arthur B. Hancock Sr., and Flickering Star, who was acquired by Cherry Valley Farm, the breeding operation of Claiborne’s Seth Hancock.)

Most of these female families were established decades ago through matings with the farm’s great stallions.  Their elite descendants continue to carry on Claiborne’s legacy, a testament to the enduring influence of these foundation broodmares.

Below is the full roster of Breeders’ Cup entries from Claiborne families, including two also-eligibles.
