FIRST SAMURAI’S LAST GUNFIGHTER TOPS ISELIN-G3

LAST GUNFIGHTER scored his third graded stakes win of the year with a stretch-long duel to take the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin S. Never more than three lengths off the lead, the 4-year-old colt by FIRST SAMURAI joined the runner-up on the far turn and battled that one to the wire to prevail in this 1 1/8-mile test at Monmouth. In his race before this one, LAST GUNFIGHTER finished runner-up to multiple G1 SW Flat Out (by Flatter) in Belmont’s $350,000 Suburban H.-G2. Earlier this year, he was a 4 1/4-length winner of the 1 3/16-mile $300,000 Pimlico Special S.-G3 and a two-length winner of Aqueduct’s 1 1/8-mile Excelsior S.-G3. The John Gunther homebred, who now has won seven of his last eight starts and four for five in 2013, has earnings of $635,405.
