Rialto Racing Stables and Southern Springs Stables’ 3-year-old colt Petrov engaged in an exciting stretch duel with One Liner in the G3 Southwest Stakes before finishing a game second behind his rival in the Feb. 20 contest at Oaklawn Park.
A son of Claiborne stallion Flatter, Petrov previously ran second in Oaklawn Park’s Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 16. Trained by Ron Moquette, he broke his maiden at first asking last November at Churchill Downs, followed by a runner-up effort in his stakes debut, the King’s Swan Stakes at Aqueduct in December. He has earned $184,800 from four career starts and currently ranks #18 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with eight points.
Bred in Kentucky by Sun Valley Farm, Petrov is out of the Bertrando mare Saracina. He is one of four stakes horses in 2017 for Flatter, who is also represented by this year’s G2 Ft. Lauderdale winner Flatlined; and G2 Swale winner Favorable Outcome. Flatter stands for $35,000 at Claiborne.
