WAR FRONT’s Belgrano ended the year with a second 2022 stakes victory when taking out the Listed Janus Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Trained by Frank Russo, the 8-year-old broke well in the five-furlong race before taking up a spot in midpack as a pair of horses dueled for the lead up front. It wasn’t until they navigated the turn that the gelding started to make his move with a hole opening up half way down the stretch to give him clear sailing from there.
It took until just a few strides from the wire for Belgrano to get his nose in front but he was up just in time to win by a head and take his earnings to $525,011 with 10 wins in 45 starts.
He was the second stakes performer of the day for WAR FRONT on the Gulfstream card with Stony Point finishing third in the Abundantia Stakes earlier on the card.
An evergreen runner for WAR FRONT, the Peace Sign Stables representative has won four stakes races in his career and been a consistent performer with 26 top three finishes at all levels in his career.
The Stonestreet Thoroughbred-bred is out of the dual Grade 1 winner Ask The Moon, who also produced Grade 3 winner Sundaysatthebeach. Ask The Moon was purchased by Belgrano’s breeder for $1.8 million while carrying him in late 2013.
Belgrano is one of 109 stakes winners for his sire with WAR FRONT having 13 stakes winners and 23 stakes performers in 2022.
