It was a new winner for SILVER STATE on Tuesday when Skordalia won a Maiden Special Weight by 2 ½ lengths.
Covering six furlongs on the Belterra dirt, she was off a step slow but that put her in perfect position to track the race favorite as that runner set the pace. John McKee had to steady Skordalia with three furlongs left to run, but even with that bobble the filly wasn’t discouraged.
Racing two wide into the stretch, Skordalia engaged Maddog in a duel and got the best of the leader late. Once she had the lead, Skordalia wasn’t for stopping and pulled away to a 2 ½ length win with only Maddog within five lengths of her at the wire.
Trained by Edward Vaughn for Spud Nuts Racing, Skordalia has finished in the top three in two of her four starts.
The filly bred by Tony Holmes, Norevale Farm, Constance Wickes and Amy Rabanal DVM is the first named foal out of Gypsy Glance.
That mare is a daughter of the successful broodmare Gold Vault, who produced dual Grade 1 winner Contested, WAR FRONT’s stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Mosler and his Grade 2-placed full brother Air Vice Marshal. Gold Vault is also a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner Pomeroy as well.
SILVER STATE earned five 100+ Beyers as a runner with 12 of his 14 starts seeing him finish in the top three – including a win in the prestigious stallion-making Metropolitan H. (G1).
