In her stakes debut, Rich Mommy added to her bankroll with a victory in the Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. After coming from behind and having to go six wide, the 3-year-old Algorithms filly kicked clear in the stretch to win by two lengths under jockey Luis Saez.
“I had a perfect trip,” Saez said. “We broke pretty good and were in the right spot. When I saw Bodacious Babe make her move I thought we might be stuck, but I saw an opportunity to get out, and she took off. Victor Barboza, her trainer, told me she comes from behind and I watched her replays, so I let everyone go ahead and we made our run from behind. It worked out well for us.”
Running for Winds of Change Racing Stable Corp., Rich Mommy came into the Sugar Swirl having won her three of her four previous starts. Overall, she has been first or second in eight of her 10 career efforts.
“The filly had been doing good for the race and the distance was perfect for her,” said Barboza. “The jockey followed instructions exactly, and thank God it all worked out. We have taken it step by step with this filly, and at this moment she is doing very well. I’m very, very happy for the barn, for the owners, for the filly, for everyone.”
Rich Mommy is out of the winning Honour and Glory mare Woodford Girl. Winds of Change purchased her at the 2016 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s June 2-year-olds and horses of racing age sale.
